This famous picture of Earth is called The Blue Marble because when you look at Earth from outer space it looks like a little blue ball! This photowas taken by some American astronauts on their way to the Moon.

We call our beautiful home Earth, and our wonderful planet is home to nearly eight billion of us! We share our world with millions of different species of plants and animals. Our planet is buzzing with life!

Earth travels around the Sun, and we’re moving superfast! As we move around on the surface of Earth, it’s carrying us through space like it’s a spaceship! Right now, as you’re reading this, you’re speeding through space, going round the Sun at about 107,000 km/h.

Planet Earth is the world to us, but it’s just one of many, many planets. How many planets are there? Well, we don’t know exactly, but scientists think there are at least ten septillion (10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000) planets!

What causes the Earth to move round the Sun?

Well, that’s a force called gravity. It’s the same force that pulls you back down to the ground when you jump – and stops you flying off into outer space!

Which is just as well; because as Earth travels round the Sun, it’s spinning round and round its centre too. If you’re standing at the equator, in the middle of the planet, you’re spinning at a speed of around 1,600km/h!
